Harambee means “Let us all pull together” in Swahili. The Harambee is about nation building. It is an ancient process long used in Africa to bring people together in times of strife and conflict.

On Saturday, August 25, 2018 We invited everyone who has attended a CivicLab public forum (through the TIF Illumination Project and the “Chicago Is Not Broke” Book Project) or who has attended a training or workshop through the POWER Institute to come together and meet one another.

That’s over 6,000 people!

We created a space where people came together from across the city and from across issue silos. Listen to interview from WGN-AM about why we organized this event.

We offered  two skill building workshops:

(1) Why/How to Start an Independent Ward Organization (IPO) – Leaders from the IPOs from the 12th, 25th and 35th Wards shared their experiences with us.

(2) How To Get and Keep Your Candidate on the Ballot – Campaign and election expert attorney Andy Finko explained how to pass petitions to get your candidate on the ballot and also ran through best practices for preparing against challenges and other tactics designed to kick your candidate OFF the ballot.

This program was made possible by a grant from the Chicago Community Trust’s “On The Table” Program.
